The Story of OedipusDuring this Greek tragedy Oedipus is the king of Thebes and has been ruling for 20 years in peace. He has married the lovely Jocasta (his mother) and has two sons, and two daughters Antigone and Ismene (who are actually his brothers and sisters too).
In the beginning of the story Oedipus is wanting to know what he can do to help his city of Thebes. He is confronted by the priest so that they can tell Oedipus what is really going on in the city. After they tell him that the plague is getting worse and they sent Creon to Apollo's temple to ask what they can do to help end the plague. When Creon comes back he tells Oedipus that they need to get rid of the man who killed Laius their king before Oedipus. Since Oedipus actually did kill his father he is the reason for the plague. Since Oedipus doesn't realize that he killed Laius he makes curses against the person who killed Laius. He is determined to find the murderer. Then Creon brings Tiresias the prophet to give people a hint on who killed the late king. When Oedipus hears the results of the prophet, he denies everything. Since the prophet blames him. Then Jocasta tries to comfort him and tell him that prophecies aren't true. Then Jocasta tells him where Laius dies and Oedipus thinks about it and starts to think that he actually did kill Laius. |
This is a song that explains exactly what happens to Oedipus during the whole story. It explains how he killed his parents and married his mom. How he ended up with his bloody eyes in a kind of comedic way.
